Sold-out Black Tie Bingo raising funds for the love of Holy Family Home
Winnipeg MB – Put on your finest frock, dust off your tuxedo, affix your fascinator, and head to Holy Family Home for a glamourous night of bingo on Thursday, 29 February 2024.
Hosted by celebrity bingo caller Chrissy Troy (host, Ace Burpee Show on 103.1 Virgin Radio), Black Tie Bingo is a new, sold-out event by Lubov SSMI Foundation to raise funds for therapeutic recreation and entertainment programming at Holy Family Home.
“Holy Family is home to 317 people, and just like you and me, they need opportunities to ‘go out,’” says Katherine Fox, CEO, Lubov SSMI Foundation. “Funds raised at Black Tie Bingo will enhance the Home’s ability to arrange concerts, performances, paint nites and other meaningful activities that bring joy and entertainment to the loved ones who live here.”
The event is a cocktail party featuring food, drink, and live music courtesy of the Rosemarie Todaschuk Jazz Trio. Guests will be invited to play several rousing rounds of bingo, with prizes fit for the occasion.
“We saw through the pandemic how important connection and social interaction is,” says Dr. Mark Karpa, chair, Holy Family Home. “I can tell you, from the experience of having a loved one who lived at Holy Family, that entertainment opportunities and special activities are absolutely vital to well-being and quality of life.”
Community response has been tremendous, with marvelous sponsors, individuals and organizations lending their support to this new venture.
“Ukrainian Credit Union Limited (UCU) has a long history of supporting Manitoba’s vibrant Ukrainian community institutions,” says Taras Pidzamecky, CEO, UCU. “In keeping with our tradition of supporting Ukrainian long-term care and assisted living facilities we are proud to be the presenting sponsor of this unique event that supports Holy Family Home’s compassionate and caring environment.”
Lubov is grateful for the generous support of sponsors: Ukrainian Credit Union, Ukrainian Credit Union Wealth Management, Kalyna Ukrainian Cooperative, Bel Acres Golf and Country Club, Clear Lake Golf Course, Lea Marc Professional Printing Services, Galarnyk Insurance, Cropo Funeral Home, and Grand Vieux Liquor Company.

Home of Hope Fundraising Breakfast - 2019
The annual Home of Hope Breakfast has been organized by the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada – Manitoba region for the past six years. Their efforts helps the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate Home of Hope ministry in Lviv, Ukraine. For the past six years the event has raised a total of over $100,000. The support generated from this event helps the Sisters with the day-to-day operations of the home that ensures the girls can receive and education and develop life skills.
The Lubov SSSMI Foundation is in regular contact with the Sisters at the Home of Hope. They provide regular updates on how the community is doing, including financial reports on the use of the donations received from Canada. They do share stories from the young women that come to the Home. Every story is filled with tragedy and most of those that come to the Home experience a transformation. Like the story from one of the girls….
“When I came into this world, I was rejected and left as an orphan. My first home was a special orphanage for babies. Later as an orphan I was placed in a boarding school and as I got older an orphanage became my home. I never had any visitors and every day I would wish that my mother would come and get me. Eventually I realized that this day was not going to happen. The only way I was able to cope with life is to become bitter, aggressive and rebellious against everyone and everything.”
When this young girl came to the Home of Hope for the first time, Sister could see how deeply wounded she was. The girl kept her distance, and continued with her rebellious, self-centered attitude. It was a difficult time for the community of Sisters and other young women at the home. But in one year her life began to change. She allowed herself to experience the love of others and the love of God. She has learned life skills and discovered the many gifts that she has and is willing to share with others. She will soon graduate with her post-secondary education and has a dream to share her life in ministry with others.
It is now three years since she came to the Hope. This is what she recently shared with the Sisters. “My life before the Home of Hope was irresponsible, difficult and out of control, but here everything changed. The example lived out by the Sisters is one that is very patient, caring and challenging. From the beginning I did not accept the Sisters but I eventually realized that everything they do, they do it out of an act of love. Because of this my life has had a lot of changes. I became responsible for my life and life decisions, I was able to let go of my complexes and become more confident. Most importantly I discovered God. I thank God for this family that has made me realize that I am needed – I have a purpose. This feeling has made me a happy person.”
There are always new beginnings at the Home of Hope…young women are moving on (Graduating in their programs), while others are arriving.
The home relies on our Canadian support to keep its doors open. Thank you to the UCWLC and many donors that come forward annually to ensure that the support is there from the Home of Hope community.

The UCWLC was proud to present the Sisters with the Icons.
This special Icon entitled the Mother of Canada was created by iconographer Vera Lazarowich Semchuk. This version of the icon was written in 2010 and includes elements such as 7 stalks of wheat, symbolic of the Eucharist and 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit. The green maple leaf symbolizes the living faith thriving in Canada.
